Firstly, I have to say that the main reason for doing these Comps is not for us, the people that work at the Skatepark, but for the BMX'ers that regularly use the park. Why then, do so many of the local guys bottle out of entering the thing at the last minute, the same guys that know the park inside-out and could easily clean up? I'm sure that this will remain a mystery and is probably some deep, dark secret known only by BMX'ers. Oh well, onto the Comp then…
As usual, the event was split into 3 groups, Novice, Intermediate and Open. Usually the Novice section is the busiest group, but today for some reason, there weren't that many takers as usual. For one of them though, the day was all a bit much and decided that a good comic and fizzy drink with mum was a far better option. By the way, if you thought that I was talking about Joe Kelly, he was actually injured and judged instead. (The lengths some people will go to not to have to enter these things is ridiculous!) |

| The two remaining entrants were George Beresford and Sonny Forde. George flew around the course without a care in the world and got a hearty round of applause for a really good effort. Sonny Forde, I'm pretty sure, will be a name that you will be hearing about a lot more if he sticks to BMX. This kid really has some bottle and no shortage of ability making no footed transfers over the volcano-spine look easy; putting several of the intermediate group to shame I have to add. Needless to say, Sonny got first place. Good work that man! |
| The Intermediate section consisted of a few more of the regular faces here at the park. Standout of the section had to be Mad Mike who Backflipped the Deathbox no-handed and generally blazed around the park in a manner befitting his name. |
| The Open section was a good mix of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Some sponsored, some not, mostly British with 1 American, from Whitstable via (viva?) Las Vegas . With the absence of Maggot due to injury, the Comp was wide open for anyone to win. The standard of riding was pretty bloody outstanding and seems to have improved dramatically, even since the last Comp in May of this year. Maybe this was because everyone thought they could sniff a possible win and were willing to risk life and limb for another pair of pink tyres! (Much to everyone's disappointment, we weren't able to get any this time……… sorry). |

| Danny Omar was going all-out to kill himself, doing Backflips over the Deathbox and just to top it all, decided that now would be just the right time to try a Flair (Backflip to 180 degree turn; landing forward) for the first time. The crowd went mental, demanding that even though he landed on his head, he should try it again…..and again. Needless to say, he just had to be awarded the Best Slam prize which could so easily have been Best Trick! |
| Talking of which, the other standout of the day, Las Vegas transplant Blake Rumsey, impressed the judges with an immensely fast, long and high wallride to flatbank and walked away with that very prize. |
| Will Smith blasted another of his trademark (screw the consequences) airs out of the quarterpipe, hanging up but not quite causing as much damage as he did last comp. Coxy had his fan club present and narrowly managed to avoid taking Best Slam on several occasions. |

| Paul Wilson was ripping with big airs and some neat lip work but it was Duffs sponsored Phil Aller that blew everyone away. The guy was pulling 3-4 tricks back to back in the quarter-bowl section alone. The height he was getting on his wallrides were actually up in the rafters and I can't remember him actually bailing a single trick. So no surprises when I tell you that he won 1st place. |
